Atchafalaya: Friend or Foe

The Morgan City Main Street program is presenting "Atchafalaya: Friend or Foe", November 10, 2011 from 5 pm to 9 pm in downtown Morgan City.

Guest speaker, Mike Lowe, Operators Manager for the Atchafalaya Basin Corps of Engineers will speak at 7:30 pm at the Everett Street Art Gallery

Displays and food samples from participating restaurants, will be located in the participating retail stores. The event is open to the public and guests are encouraged to visit the stores between 5 to 7 pm to view exhibits, sample food and begin Christmas shopping.

Passports will be available in all stores and by visiting all participating businesses and turning your signed passports to any store at the end of your shopping will be eligible for drawings.

Retail stores participating include Leon Kahn Department and Bridal Shop, Sherry's Intuitions, Shannon Design, The Frame Shop, Plantation Treasures, Interiors, Wildflower Boutique, Flower Fashions. Participating restaurants include Cafe Jojo's, Latin Corner, Sweet & Simple Cupcakes and Cakes and Rita Mae's Kitchen.

Veteran's Day Celebration

VETERAN’S DAY CELEBRATION
FRIDAY - NOVEMBER 11, 2011

Until June 1, 1954, Veteran’s Day was called Armistice Day which was the official end of World War I. The treaty that ended the war was to take effect at 11:00 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month. Armistice Day was celebrated to pay respect to all the service men that lost their lives during this Great War. It is celebrated in all the commonwealth countries that participated in World War I. In some commonwealth countries it is called Remembrance Day.

Following World II, the Citizens of the state of Kansas began a letter writing campaign to make this day a national holiday to recognize all veterans of the armed services. Most of the states and their governors got behind this petition and was able to have Congress pass a law to declare November 11th as Veteran’s Day. That law took effect on June 1, 1954. So today, is a celebration for all our veterans and especially for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. It is for our departed heroes that we fire 3 volleys of shot by 7 men and the play taps.

Immediately following the celebration, everyone is invited for soup & sandwiches at the American Legion Hall located on Highway 182

Battle of the Paddles in Franklin

Hanson Memorial Announces 3rd Annual Tail-Gator Food Fest

The Hanson Memorial High School Parent – Teacher Organization would like to extend an invitation to the public to join us for the third annual TAIL - GATOR FOOD FEST featuring THE BATTLE OF THE PADDLES. This year festivities will take place on Saturday, November 5th, 2011 from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The TAIL – GATOR FOOD FEST is a fun, casual, family friendly, outdoor event held in Franklin, LA at Hanson Memorial High School’s campus. This year’s event will feature a gumbo and jambalaya cook-off. Over 20 cooking teams are expected to prepare their versions of these two popular Louisiana dishes. Cooking teams will begin preparing their cuisine at 6:30 am and the food judging will begin at 11:30 am. Everyone is invited to come out and taste the Southern fare of the competing teams, and vote for their favorite through the People’s Choice Award.

Additional festivities that will be going on throughout the day are: classic carnival games, arts and crafts, a silent auction, a one mile fun run, a cake walk, a horseshoe tournament, laser tag, and many other games. Entertainment for the day will be music by Mark Robicheaux, Rick Lorenzo, Booga Curry, and Chase Landry & 5 o’clock Shadow.
